My Sandra Betzina Coat ( V1494 ) at Last

Well, I started this coat the first week in May and it's taken me this long to get it to the wearing stage.

I think the coat genie is trying to tell me I have enough already because my last three jacket/ coats have been real challenges. I have to admit I was tempted to give up on this one . The flared out from above the waist silhouettte isn't flattering my shape, but I wore it today to a luncheon and got raves about it so that gives me the confidence to keep it.

The pattern is V1494  and the fabric is a denim look heavy  drapery linen from my stash.

Here's the coat but the photography and the colour leave a lot to be desired. The top stitching is actually in taupe not white as the pic would suggest.

The collar looks terrible closed up like that. I think the lining is pulling but I don't have it in me to go in there and fix it. I'll be wearing it like this in any case. Isn't it pretty this way?

First about the collar problem. This is what the original collar looked like. Yes it really looked like that!!!

This is what I did to fix it. Plus I took a 1.5 " wedge at center back which ended at nothing at the neckline.

It still looked like this however

but I decided to trust in Sandra and it ended up fine in the end.

For my coat,I changed the pockets because I don't like inseam ones. If you want to know how to make these pockets,
please let me know and I'll post a tutorial on Diana's Sewing Lessons.

The lining is a poly slippery fabric that I thought would look cool and the yellow bias trim is too

A look at the back which is the part I don't find particularly flattering on me.

I do love colour and it feels wonderful on so I will wear my coat

And that's all I have to say about that.

I bought this pattern when it first came out so was excited to see your review. Your rendition is fabulous and I think this shape flatters you. Sometimes we sewists play it safe and only sew the silhouettes we know work on us rather than trying something new. I know I am guilty of this and am trying to push myself to sew different shapes.Karen

I think the coat is wonderful on you! I bought this pattern; however, doubt I will make it. We just don't have enough cold weather to here justify making a coat! In some ways that is sad; in other ways, it is great. Just the way it is in my part of the world. ;)

Great looking coat, very classy looking on you. I can't even think about sewing a coat with the weather over 95 degree and the humidity about 97%. Great job & you look lovely as usual.

It is just adorable! How can you say it is not flattering on you? The flare is so sweet and if there are any figure flaws, I can't see them. I really, really like it. The colour is fabulous too on you.

I have been humming and hah-hing about this pattern. I think that you have made a lovely version of this coat, and it actually looks good on you over slim fitting clothes - especially with the zipper undone. The line of the resulting V neck is very flattering especially with the collar framing your face so nicely. I think now I must purchase this!

I love your last sentence! Sometimes I get to the end of a project and I think the same thing! This is a gorgeous make and it's the details that make it so special. I'm glad you've grown to like it because it's beautiful!

I really love your jacket. It's so much nicer than the pattern.
All the detailing you added makes this jacket really special.

You look lovely in your coat and love the colour on you. You have got me intrigued how the collar ended up so nice.

Gorgeous coat and I love this color on you! Yes, I would really be interested in a tutorial on how you made those pockets.

Oh,my Diana!
I think the whole coat looks AWESOME on you. I like the front, the back, the sides, the color, the top-stitching. Everything. I think everything looks bad when I get it done because I'm so tired of it. Several days later, I like it again. Terry says it is like having a baby, lol.
Enjoy your new coat!
Hugs, Joy

This pattern has been bubbling up to the top of my queue, so I really appreciate that you got there first. That collar is a bit scary looking. It's hard to believe that it looked so normal in the end! I loooove the back detail and flare, but I agree that the general flare of the coat has me a bit concerned. I've been trying to decide whether I should remove the fullness in the bottom front. But I *like* the fullness in the back bottom, so how weird is it to remove only the front fullness. These sorts of questions keep me up at night. ;)

But yours is really beautiful and I'm not one bit surprised that you got rave reviews! The back is my favorite part, with all of that beautiful topstitching.

You'd done a wonderful job and the top-stitching is perfection. The design didn't thrill me from the pattern jacket, but I think you've inspired a few sewers to give it a try.

I love your coat! You did a great job and have inspired me to get moving on mine! I personally love the flare of this coat (one of the reasons I purchased the pattern) and I actually think it is very flattering on you.
I would also like to see your tutorial on the pockets you designed.

Your coat is gorgeous! Why would you even think that it could be unflattering? The style, the colour - all look wonderful on you.

I'm coming way late and catching up on blog reading and your coat just stopped me in my tracks. I love all of it!! I ignored this pattern but may have to reconsider in light of this terrific result. Even though it is hot and humid and I am at the beach this week, the boutiques I visited yesterday have started putting fall clothes on display and this silhouette was everywhere. Bravo!!
