Since I have narrow, sloped shoulders, and this coat has dolman sleeves ,I had to add light shoulder pads. I always make my own pads, usually out of cotton batting or fleece. This time I used one layer of self fabric and one of fleece.
I started with this as the pattern which I layed on the fold.
I sewed two darts as in this photo:
This is what I ended up with:
Then I sewed another dart as in this picture which also shows a smaller layer of fleece To avoid bulk, I merely cut out the dart shape in the fleece:
....and got this:
I sewed the two layers of the shoulder pad together pulling up on the fabric in front and in the back of the presserfoot. This shapes the pad quite nicely.

Hi Diana, You've been busy blogging, looks great :)
I normally don't put shoulder pads on my jackets, but if for some reason I have to, I also make my own. I usually make the "smallest" pads ever :) Tany had suggested I try shoulder shields.. "shoulder shields would provide some extra shoulder shaping/support... with no added height on the shoulders". So I will try this on my Great Coat sew along jacket if I need some :)
Do you work this Saturday?
If all goes well I should be able to get some time in Fabricville :)
Hi Ann. No but I work next Saturday. My daughter is home from Ottawa for a few days and I've been sewing for her ( a knit wrap dress from Vogue which I finished today and will post later in the weekend and now I've got a good start on a red linen trench coat that I want to fit on her while she's home .she is actually with friends in Fredericton and I'll pick her up Sunday. She came home for the Blues Festival.I left you two comments on your blog just now.
Diana
Great tutorial. I'm planning on making this coat too, just got to decide on the fabric.
